The “New Woman” of the turn of the last century stepped forward to claim a greater role in sports, higher education, work outside the home, and eventually the vote. This white suit from that period expresses boldness and privilege. A young woman from Old Town, Maine must have cut a dashing figure when she wore it. She married a man twice her age, had five children, and was widowed when her youngest was five years old. During the Great Depression she experienced yet another reversal of fortune. I imagine she met her life’s adventure with fortitude. - Cheslye Ventimiglia
